Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The deal calls for Kilpatrick to plead guilty to two felony counts of obstruction of justice by committing perjury, agreeing to serve four months in jail, pay up to $1 million in restitution, and serve five years' probation. He also agreed not to run for office during that five-year span.

The mayor will turn over his state pension to the City of Detroit, which paid $8.4 million to settle two whistle-blower lawsuits three former cops filed against the city. The mayor was charged with eight felony counts ranging from conspiracy to perjury to misconduct in office to obstruction of justice after the Free Press revealed that the mayor lied on the witness stand during a police whistle-blower trial and gave misleading testimony about whether he intended to fire a deputy police chief investigating allegations of wrongdoing by members of his inner circle.

A little more history

Embattled Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick pleaded guilty Thursday to charges resulting from a sex scandal and is to resign from office, a prosecutor said.

The resignation won't take effect for 14 days, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said outside the courthouse.

Governor Jennifer Granholm's removal hearing against Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been suspended this morning for two weeks until his sentencing hearing. If all goes according to plan, at that time, the hearing will be cancelled.

Unfortunately, the interest in Detroit problems is minimal here. There are too few of us here that it actually affects. I only reported the news as it was happening.

It's much easier to get noticed writing something stupid about Palin or Obama.

I find this whole situation very interesting. Kilpatrick seems to be a real throwback type of politician.

Balls of steel, big and physically intimidating. He seemed to think he could get away with anything.

He could be charming when he wanted to be.

But the level of corruption and the appearances of much more going on in collusion with others, including Detroit Police, made him a dangerous man to cross.
